Chapter 10 – Return To Jail

"Hello there. Rob, isn't it?"

"Yeah..."

It was Monday morning court and I'd just been told my second application for bail had been delayed, and that everyone had to have some form of legal representation. To this it seemed I was no exception, despite making it clear I was tired of interviews.

Philip Turnback had his head down, and was shuffling through my file. I tried to catch the contents of the pages as he turned them.

"Yes," he muttered, prising one page loose and shaking it out for me to see. "It seems you've made a statement confessing to the charge of supplying crack cocaine, without any legal advice I may add. Of course the police are delighted with your co-operation, but the whole statement seems a little too good to be true."

I could understand anyone being confused by my sudden willingness to play the model suspect, but I didn't think he realized my intentions, not yet. I also remember my beige trench coat, and felt certain they had a surveillance photo of me conducting business in the streets. Thrust into an interview I was made subtly conscious the police had observed my movements for some time. Therefore I had a sound reason to opt for some sort of co-operation. Giving them more than they needed to charge me. Neil was part of the plan.

"It's bound to raise questions in court " my solicitor Philip Turnback continued, " err as to whether you were coerced, or even intimidated into making this sort of confession?"

That's what I wanted to hear and I nodded, because Robert Suilerman, was planning to turn these criminal charges on their head.

"What? What did I say anyway? I can't even remember..I was a drunk as well ya' see.!"

Turnback raised his eyebrows. I guess also possibly unaware his words just confirmed what I hoped to be my escape route, but I needed to be careful.

"So you'd been drinking?" Philip coloured with surprise. "Then they should never have questioned you in that state and alone!"

"Yeah... I protested," I informed him " And they claim, I mean they say they found those things on me."

"Yes, yes, Robert, but this was a small amount that could be a simple case of possession. Without your voluntary statement admitting the intent to supply you see."

I pretended to think this over. "Yeah but its not true, you said it ya self, they made me say that. So what's the chance of bail then?"

"We'll, we can have a go," Turnback said. "But to be honest, it doesn't look very good. The stipendary is on the bench this morning, so you may have to reside in Walton for a week or two, " he paused momentarily gaging my disappointment. "Err... But there is something else bothering me about all this, Robert " he continued. "Its concerning certain officers attitudes towards you. Err... I mean the Police officers who arrested you where from the North West Flying Squad. Although the initial investigations where being carried out by members of the Met Police."

I was now holding my breath and wasn't sure whether I should reveal to the man called Philip Turnback another serious issue, This concerned a payback from members of London's Metropolitan Police. He was staring at me almost waiting and wanting me to fill in the pieces for him...
